Another injured councillor criticalLeT behind attack, investigation underway: Police4 PSOs suspended Srinagar, Mar 29: The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) municipal councillor and a policeman were killed after militants opened fire during an urban local body meeting in Sopore area of north Kashmir on Monday, officials said.The slain were identified as Reyaz Ahmad Peer, son of Ghulam Nabi Peer of Ningli Sopore, who was a councillor of Sopore Municipal Council, Special Police Officer (SPO) Shafqat Nazir Khan son of Nazir Ahmad of Mundji Sopore, who was part of security outside the meeting.While another councillor Shamas Din Peer son of Ghulam Mohammad Peer suffered bullet injuries and was shifted to SMHS Hospital in Srinagar for further treatment. He is battling for his life.A senior police officer told Rising Kashmir that the duo were attacked in the building complex where a meeting of councillors was underway. They were declared brought dead at the hospital.The officer said another councillor and other workers have been shifted to safer locations in the town. Soon after the attack, police launched a search operation in the area to track the attackers.“Riyaz Ahmad Peer, his wife and his father in law Shamas Din Peer were associated with BJP from past several years and had won DDC elections recently on party’s ticket from Sopore Municipal Council,” the officer said.Inspector general of Police Kashmir Zone, Vijay Kumar, said a local recruit of Laskar-e-Toiba outfit Mudasir Pandit and another foreign militant were involved in the attack. Further investigation is going on, he said.The IGP said that he has directed SSP Sopore to suspend 4 PSOs of protected persons for not retaliating appropriately.Senior Superintendent of Police Sopore, Sudhanshu Verma told Rising Kashmir that they have to access CCTV footage to investigate the case from all angles,” he said.Medical Superintendent SMHS, Dr. Nazir Choudhary said the Peer was being operated upon at the hospital.“I cannot say anything as of now, it will take us time to assess his health,” he said.Another doctor said that he had suffered serious damage. “His condition is not stable and it will take at least 72 hours to assess his condition.”It is the second attack by militants in north Kashmir. Last week, three CRPF personnel including an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) were killed while another was injured in a militant attack in the Lawaypora area of Srinagar.Lawaypora attack:Injured CRPF man succumbs, toll 3After battling for life for more than four days, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel who was crucially injured in Lawaypora militant attack last week, succumbed to his injuries on Monday at Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, (SKIMS), officials said.The slain trooper was identified as Gd/ct as Jagan Nath Roy from Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal.A senior doctor at SKIMS told Rising Kashmir that the deceased had suffered a fire injury on his head and was being treated from the past four days at the hospital.“He succumbed to his injuries on Monday afternoon,” the doctor said.Earlier on Thursday, two CRPF personnel including an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) were killed while two others were injured in a militant attack in the Lawaypora area of Srinagar.After 24 hours, Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kashmir Range Vijay Kumar said they had arrested two OGWs while a local militant has also been identified. The vehicle used in the attack was also seized by the police,” Kumar said.
