DDC chairperson posts: PAGD grabs Bandipora, Independents get Baramulla, Poonch

Kishtwar, Rajouri polls deferred due to lack of quorumSrinagar, Feb 13:In the final phase of the District Development Council (DDC), People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) Saturday emerged victorious in the elections for chairperson and vice-chairperson posts in Bandipora district, while Independent candidates won Baramulla and Poonch seats.Elections for Kishtwar and Rajouri seats were deferred due to lack of quorum.Abdul Gani Bhat of National Conference (NC) secured seven votes and was elected as chairperson of Bandipora DDC seat while Kaunsar Shafeeq of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured vice-chairperson post by getting eight votes of the total 13 votes.There are 13 DDC members in Bandipora as the counting of votes in the 14th constituency-Hajin-C was put on hold as one of the candidates is a Pakistani national.The PAGD has eight DDC members including five from NC and three from PDP. Apni Party has two members, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has one member and two are Independents.In Baramulla, Safeena Baig, an independent candidate backed by Peoples Conference (PC) won the election for the post of chairperson of district development council (DDC) Baramulla while Sonullah Parrey of PC bagged the position of vice-chairperson.Safeena, who is a wife of former PDP leader Muzzafar Baig, secured 10 votes while her rival Qurat-Ul-Bashir of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) managed to get only four votes.Of 14 DDC seats, two are from Apni Party, National Conference (NC), People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Congress each while Peoples Conference (PC) has three members and Independents are also three in number.In Poonch, independent candidates won chairperson and vice-chairperson posts on Saturday.Tazeem Akhter, an independent candidate, bagged the chairperson post and got nine votes against his rival candidate from Congress— Nazia Ghani who got 5 votes.Mohammad Ashfaq, also an independent candidate was elected as vice-chairperson.Election for the post of chairperson and vice-chairperson of DDC Kishtwar was today postponed due to lack of quorum.District Panchayat Election officer (DPEO) Kishtwar Ashok Sharma informed that the meeting of the election which was scheduled today at 11:30 am has been adjourned due to lack of prescribed quorum.”Only nine elected DDC members out of 14 were present in the meeting. The next meeting for elections to the post of chairperson and vice-chairperson shall be held within 10 days,” Sharma said.Meanwhile, polls in Rajouri district were also adjourned due to lack of quorum.The election process which began at 11:30 lacked quorum even as PAGD had nine members on record.Only four of the National Conference, three of Congress and one from PDP turned.
