Sgr records -7.8 deg C, lowest in 8 yrs

Weather to remain dry till January 20: MeTSrinagar, Jan 13: Srinagar recorded minus 7.8 degree Celsius temperature on January 13, the coldest night in the month of January in the past eight years.Director Indian Meteorological Department, Srinagar Centre  Sonam Lotus  told Rising Kashmir that the city recorded the lowest minimum temperatures in the last 8 years. The  last time the same temperature was recorded on 14th Jan 2012, he said.“It is the peak of Chilai  Kalan and we are expecting a more decrease in temperatures in the coming days. We have recorded the same temperatures five times so far since 1980,” he said.Lotus said mercury had plummeted in Srinagar to minus 7.8°C on 14 January 2012, minus 8.3°C in 1995 and minus 11.8 in 1991 besides lowest ever on 31 January 1893.He said, the weather will remain dry till January 20 throughout J&K. “ There is no forecast for any major snowfall, rainfall till January 27. However light snow may occur at isolated places,” Lotus said.He said cold wave conditions will continue to prevail in Kashmir. “Both evening and morning will drop further in the next few days,” he said.Kashmir has received five spells of snow over the last two months with the heaviest this season last week. In Srinagar several water bodies including parts of Dal Lake, Nigeen and Jhelum rivers were frozen.As per MeT officials Ski resort Gulmarg recorded minus 10°C as the night’s lowest temperature in the valley, while Pahalgam recorded minus 11.3°C. Qazigund recorded a low of minus 9.3°C. Kokernag recorded a low of minus 9.9°C and Kupwara settled at minus 5.6°C.The Valley received a heavy snowfall between January 3 and 5, which resulted in closure of the 270-kilometre Srinagar-JammuHighway and suspension of flights at Srinagar Airport for four days.Kashmir is in the middle of the 40-day intense winter period called ‘Chillai Kalan’ which started on December 21 with sub-zero night temperatures across the region.
